HICKORY, N.C. — A Hickory man has been arrested on accusations that he abused two young boys, causing multiple serious injuries that have left the victims in the hospital.

WSOC reports the mother of the victims, who are ages three and four, says they are in a Winston-Salem hospital with injuries that include a fractured skull, torn intestines, bruising to several internal organs and broken ribs.

The mom’s live-in boyfriend, Jeffrey Sumpter, is charged with two counts of felony child abuse inflicting serious injury.

Police tell WSOC they were alerted of the possible abuse on Sunday by staff at Catawba Valley Medical Center.  The boys’ mother says she rushed her younger son there when he collapsed in their living room after she returned from work that day.

The mom tells the station Sumpter was watching her children while she was at work.

According to arrest warrants obtained by WSOC, signs of previous injuries to the boys were also discovered.

The boys’ mom says her children “loved” Sumpter and called him “daddy,” WSOC reports.

The suspect is being held under a $150,000 bond.  He has a court appearance slated for Monday morning in Newton.
