MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Dozens of people packed an Iredell County courtroom Tuesday to support a former middle school teacher charged with murder.
The Mooresville Tribune reported that Dawn Bridget Kavanaugh, 42, is accused of stabbing and killing her boyfriend, Ronald Ketchum, on Feb. 10. She has been held without bond since then.
Her attorneys argued on Tuesday that her lack of criminal record and ties to the community should give her a chance to get out of jail.
The paper reported that the judge eventually gave her a $200,000 bail.
Kavanaugh taught sixth-grade social studies at Lakeshore Middle School and recently received the “Teacher of the Year” award.
Kavanaugh has been with the school district since 2004 when she started at South Iredell High School. She has taught sixth grade social studies since 2010.
A motive for the alleged incident has not been released.
