CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officials recovered the body of a 19-year-old who was reported missing by his mother on Sunday, according to WSOC.

Officers responded to a breaking and entering on Thursday after a person reported seeing two men breaking into cars.

When they arrived, the two men fled the scene on foot. Officers lost sight of them on Billingsley Road. The search ended when police found no evidence of a breaking and entering.

On Sunday a woman called the police to report her son, Demonta Deshawn Gaither, 19, missing.

She said that he possibly jumped into a pond off of Billingsley Road after running from police last week and has not been seen since, according to WSOC.

Cedric Young, 17, the man who was with Gaither, cooperated with police and showed them exactly where Gaither entered the pond.

Young said the police were no longer chasing him and Gaither when they entered the water. He said he never saw Gaither get out of the pond.

A search began for the teen and Gaither’s body was found in the pond around 1 p.m. Monday.
