MEBANE, N.C. — Two young boys were playing Sunday afternoon at their Mebane apartment complex when their father, James Vandling, heard screaming.

“They screamed they found a dead body,” he said.

Vandling says the body was in a creek bed on the property of the apartment complex, Spring Forest at Deerfield. Mebane Police have identified it as that of Carlos Demarko Whitfield, 43, of Mebane, who was reported missing on Sept. 27.

Vandling says his two boys, ages 10 and 13, are still shaken up about what they saw.

“They felt safe here,” he said. “And at that point now, what is safety to them? When you run across something like that.”

Vandling says he suspects the body washed into the creek after last week’s rain. He says it can’t have been in the apartment complex long, because people frequently run and walk their dogs in the area.

Police have not released autopsy information in detail, but say at this point they do not expect foul play in Whitfield’s death.
