RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — Officials believe they have identified the body found in Asheboro last Saturday as missing South Carolina woman Susan Peterson, according to the Courier-Tribune.
Deputies said the woman’s body was found near a “makeshift shelter,” made of black garbage bags tied to trees along Pisgah Covered Bridge Road by Pisgah Church Road.
Investigators said they found food, water bottles, books (paperback novels and a Bible), hand tools, various clothing and a suitcase at the scene.
Peterson was reported missing about 14 weeks ago when she didn’t return from a trip to Charlotte.
The medical examiner estimated the body had been dead for about eight weeks.
Officials are awaiting confirmation of the woman’s identity from the state before they move along in their investigation.
