MEBANE, N.C. — In small, charming, historic downtown Mebane, there’s a big city trend brewing. Regulars cozy to the bar and order a nice, cold draft of Kombucha.
“It was packed, lines out the door, you thought you were at a rock concert,” laughed regular Scott Medeiros.
Filament Coffee opened in September and along with offering specialty coffee drinks and cold-brewed coffee, there is Kombucha on tap.
Kombucha has been a top seller at Whole Foods in Greensboro for a few years, but this is the first location in the Piedmont to offer the drink on tap.
“It’s an ancient tea, made with medicinal herbs, fruits and berries. It’s extremely low in sugar and caffeine and is fermented, but it’s not alcoholic,” said Filament owner Addie Lunden.
The fizzy drink is said to have some pretty heady health benefits. Researchers say it helps detoxifies the body and helps with digestion, sleep and joint pain.
“People will ask to try it and you see some funny faces,” laughs Lunden. “Not everyone loves it, but for those who do, they really love it. It’s just really good for you and is flavorful. You really just have to try it.”
