WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- BB&T Corp. on Tuesday announced plans to open corporate offices in Greensboro that will eventually house 2,500 associates, creating 1,700 new jobs within the next five years.

According to BB&T's chief operating officer Chris Henson, the company has signed a 7-year sublease to open the new BB&T Triad Corporate Center in the former American Express service center on Airport Center Drive.

By consolidating corporate offices into a central location, the chief operating officer says the company will have a greater presence in the Triad.

“We expect to add approximately 1,700 new jobs during the next five years, which will have a positive economic impact on the Triad region,” said Henson. “The new BB&T Triad Corporate Center allows us to consolidate offices, many of which are nearing capacity, in a central location and provide space for future expansion.”

Henson noted when making the decision to locate the offices near PTI, the company did not request, nor were offered economic development incentives as part of the transaction.

Greensboro Mayor Robbie Perkins says BB&T's decision will benefit the entire area.

"When you have a local company that has chosen to make a decision to put that many people back to work in our area it’s a great day for this whole area," said Perkins.

Initially, BB&T expects to move between 50 and 100 associates into the 390,000-square-foot building in December. They will increase the number of employees during a five-year phase-in-period. Most of these positions will be administrative, back office, and support jobs.

According to Damian Birkel with Professional in Training, a support group for professionals who have been laid off, the announcement gives hope to those who have lost their jobs.

"You might be out there struggling but you're thinking, wow, if something like this is happening what else is going to come," said Birkel.

There is no word on when BB&T will start hiring for the new positions or what the salary range for the jobs will be.
