BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. — The Bald Head Island Ferry ran aground Tuesday morning off Battery Island injuring multiple passengers and a crew member, according to WECT.
“There are some injured passengers and they were transported by the Coast Guard,” said Joyce Fulton of Bald Head Island Limited, the parent company of Bald Head Island Transportation Inc., which operates the ferry.
The incident occurred on the 9 a.m. ferry. About 50 passengers were on board the ferry when it ran aground.
Officials confirmed 13 people were taken to area hospitals. Ten people had minor injuries and two had moderate injuries, according to WECT.
Bald Head Limited CEO Chad Paul said the “Adventure Ferry” hit a sand bar around marker 16 near Battery Island. Bald Head Island spokeswoman Karen Ellison told WECT the ferry was heading from Southport to Bald Head Island when the ferry ran aground.
The trip from Deep Point to the island takes about 22 minutes.
Initial reports indicated passengers were “thrown in the water,” however that report appears to be inaccurate.
Jack Ritger, an eyewitness, said a 55-year-old female with chest and spinal injuries was airlifted from the scene.
