GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The dog that suffered burns to 50 percent of his body is making progress.

Toby was brought in to the Guilford County Animal Shelter a little over a week ago. Workers say a woman found him abandoned and burned in a yard near Battleground Avenue in Greensboro.

"He is so much better than when he came in," said Donna West, with the Guilford County Animal Shelter.

Toby is starting to get fur back where his burns are and just a couple days ago he took his first steps.

"Everything that he does that improves is a big deal. This dog came in half dead," said West.

On Friday, Toby will get his first of many surgeries. Veterinarians will have to remove his right eye. Community donations have the $400 bill covered.

"He's got the will. He's got the fight and it lets us know we did the right thing by saving this little fella because he's just so happy," said West.

Police are still looking for Toby's owner or whoever did this. They are treating this as an animal cruelty case.
