GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford County Schools showed interested in renaming Aycock Middle School after Mel Swann on Thursday night.

The board voted 7-2 to put the name forward for a 30-day comment period, after which time they will vote again on a motion on whether to finalize it.

Swann was a former Guilford County Schools teacher, administrator and the first deputy superintendent of Guilford County Schools following the merger of the Greensboro, High Point and county systems in 1993.

Swann passed away this past June.

The board was presented with a list of more than 100 names from a committee who took suggestions during public meetings.
