HIGH POINT, N.C. — On Christmas Day, when Atrium Inn employees checked on occupants of a room, a crying 11-year-old girl answered the door and said she couldn’t wake her mother.

Emergency personnel responded about 1 p.m. to the hotel, at 425 S. Main St. and found 35-year-old Chiquita Lawanna Adams of Greensboro dead on one of the beds in the room, according to an autopsy report from the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The report listed her last name as Wilson.

Adams’ boyfriend had left before hotel employees arrived at the door, High Point detectives told medical examiners.

Police arrested 35-year-old Shanion Donta Watson, who has no known permanent address, two days later. They charged him with larceny of property and felony child abuse in connection with the theft of Adams’ car and a child being left alone with Adams’ body in the hotel room, police said. They also charged him with first-degree murder in her death.
