BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A large-scale search was underway early Wednesday morning for a missing hiker in the Linville Gorge, WSOC reported.

Burke County officials said multiple agencies, including Avery, Caldwell, Mitchell, Buncombe, Henderson, and Haywood counties, were assisting with the search.

The hiker is reported to be 59-year-old Ronald Brookshire, a pastor from Wilkes County and an experienced hiker. Deputies said Brookshire went on a day hike on Tuesday, but never returned.

Search teams have hiked down the west side of Linville Gorge and along the Pinchin Trail, dealing with steep terrain and very warm temperatures.

The search has been ongoing since 8 p.m. Tuesday.
