WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Police say they're searching for a man who may have tried kidnapping a child in Winston-Salem Sunday.

Officers responded to a report of an attempted kidnapping in the 600 block of Pecan Ridge Circle around 6:30 p.m. because a 5 year old girl riding her bike told her parents a man drove by slowly and reached out the window of his car for her.

The man was described as a Hispanic male of an unknown age with a thin build.  He was clean-shaven with short brown hair, but was balding, police said.  He was driving a dark-green, two door car, which may have been an Oldsmobile or similar style sedan.

"Now that this has happened you kind of think twice before you let them go anywhere and kind of scared to turn your back if even a second with younger kids," says Scott Jeffries a parent in the neighborhood.

Officers will continue to monitor the area and have gone door-to-door across the Pecan Ridge neighborhood in an effort to learn more about the incident.

Neighborhood Association President Claudette Bailey said she has sent out emails warning the whole community to keep an eye out.

"We are on it and we will be looking out," says Bailey. "Whoever this guy is maybe we can get him out of our community and off the streets so he won't go into another community," she said.

The child was not hurt.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident or suspect is asked to call police or Crimestoppers at (336) 727-2800.
