CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman was killed and a man survived a home explosion in Charlotte, fire officials said Tuesday night. The home was reduced to rubble.

Dr. Jebran Karam, who is one of the owners of the home, was in the ER Tuesday night after he was pulled from the pile of debris, the CEO of Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, West Virginia, told reporter Joe Bruno.

Karam was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Firefighters said he was conscious and alert after the explosion.

Karam is a prominent cardiologist in Beckley. The CEO of the hospital said Karam is a tremendous cardiologist, physician and advocate for his patients. Karam and his wife purchased the home in Ballantyne in 2015.

A woman’s body was later recovered from the debris Tuesday night, officials said.

The man and woman’s relationship has not been disclosed.
