OAK RIDGE, N.C. -- One person was killed in a 3-vehicle accident in Oak Ridge Wednesday afternoon, according to Highway Patrol Master Trooper Chris Knox.

The accident happened at about 3:15 p.m. along N.C. 68 near Harrell Road, where N.C. 68 crosses over the Haw River.

An investigation revealed that a Ford Explorer driven by Larry Gene Biggs, 66, of Madison, was traveling south on N.C. 68, Knox said. Biggs traveled across the double-yellow lines and struck a Ford Focus and an Infiniti M45 for an unknown reason.

The Explorer then struck a temporary bridge railing and overturned off the roadway to the left into the Haw River, Knox said. Oak Ridge and Stokesdale fire departments and dive teams responded to the scene.

Biggs was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the other two vehicles involved in the accident were not injured.

Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the accident, Knox said.

The accident is still under investigation.
