ASHEVILLE, N.C. — North Carolina Wildlife officials are investigating after an Asheville man shot and killed a black bear in his yard.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that the shooting happened Monday afternoon as the man was working in his driveway with his daughter.
Authorities said a neighbor called the man and said a bear was headed his way.
The man then went inside his home and came back out with a 30-30 hunting rifle, fatally shooting the animal, officials said.
The fatally wounded bear then reportedly rolled onto a neighbor’s driveway. Some neighbors have complained about the shooting.
The black bear was described as a year and a half old female weighing around 150-175 pounds.
Officials said no charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing. The man could possibly be charged with killing a bear out of season.
The charge is a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of a $4,000 fine and a loss of hunting privileges for two years.
