ASHEBORO, N.C. — An Asheboro man has been charged in the November hit-and-run death of a woman who had crossed the street to check her mail.

Matthew Jason Rife, 39, of 5157 Lassiter Mill Road, is charged with felony hit-and-run, the Highway Patrol said.

Rife is accused of hitting and killing Brenda Alessi Brooks, 67, of 4818 Old Randleman Road. According to the Highway Patrol, Brooks was struck and knocked into a ditch Nov. 30 as she walked back to her driveway.

The Patrol has received hundreds of tips about the case, said Trooper Chris Knox. However, it wasn’t until Tuesday that a tip led them to a suspect. Investigators had previously said a white F-250 pickup was believed to have struck Brooks.
