THOMASVILLE, N.C. — A Thomasville man was arrested Thursday on a charge of possessing a knife at East Davidson High School, authorities said.

Christopher Quinn McElroy, 21, who lives on Hobbs Avenue, was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office stated.

Billy Hunt, the principal of East Davidson High School, and the school-resource officer saw two men walking in a parking lot between East Davidson High School and Brown Middle School, according to the Davidson County Schools and the sheriff’s office.

The principal and the officer, a Davidson County sheriff’s deputy, questioned the men and told them they weren’t allowed on school property.

The deputy searched one of the men and found a knife on him, the school district said. School administrators sent a letter home to parents of East Davidson students about the incident.

McElroy was being held Thursday in the Davidson County Jail with bond set at $3,500. He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 24.
