Appalachian State student found dead in dorm room identified

BOONE, N.C. — The Appalachian State University student found dead in a dorm room on Monday has been identified.

At approximately 5:45 p.m. Monday, campus police conducted a welfare check on a student in Appalachian PanHellenic Hall.

When police knocked on the door and received no response, they opened the door with a key and discovered Mary Catherine Johnson, 19, of Raleigh, deceased.

The investigation has uncovered no foul play and police have no evidence to suggest there is any threat to the university community.
