FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The sale of a new basketball shoe prompted an altercation outside Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville early Wednesday morning.

The incident started around 4:15 a.m. among members of a crowd that was gathered outside as they waited for a chance to purchase the new Air Jordan 11 Legend Blue shoe at Finish Line when the store was slated to open at 8 a.m. At a mall in Gastonia, four people were arrested in a fight over the shoes this past Sunday.

Authorities said an officer retrieved a pepper spray canister from the trunk of his vehicle and deployed the spray into the crowd in an effort to break up the scuffle. Other officers were also called to the scene before the incident was brought under control.
