BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — An alleged burglar died after he was attacked by an alligator while running from deputies, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office told WFTV.

Matthew Riggins’ body was discovered in Barefoot Bay Lake on Nov. 23.

Deputies told WFTV he drowned as a result of an alligator attack.

Riggins told his girlfriend earlier in November that he and another man were planning to burglarize homes in the area, investigators said. A witness called deputies after seeing the men.

Riggins and his alleged accomplice ran from deputies into a wooded area, WFTV reports. Riggins was later reported as missing.

During the recovery of Riggins’ body, authorities discovered an 11-foot alligator near it. Florida Fish and Wildlife caught the animal and had it euthanized.

Reports obtained by WFTV said the “forensic examination of the alligator located remains consistent with the injuries to Riggins inside the alligator’s stomach.”

Riggins’ alleged accomplice has been located, deputies said. He is refusing to cooperate with the investigation.
