ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. -- More than 20 people were arrested Thursday and more are being sought in a drug bust in Alamance County.

Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson said the investigation was conducted over the course of six months, with assistance from Elon, Burlington, Graham, Mebane, Haw River, Gibsonville and Elon University police departments. Together, the officials work as the Alamance Narcotics Enforcement Team (ANET) and hope to send a powerful message.

"Those that have made up their minds - they're going to be gang bangers, drug dealers, whatever," Sheriff Johnson said, "We need to do some suppression on these individuals. Catch them and send them to prison. It's time to go after these people wide open."

Johnson said those arrested Thursday are suspected of dealing heroin, cocaine and prescription medications. He said some are low-level and mid-level dealers, but four are "local, major traffickers."

Oftentimes, Johnson said, drugs can be the motivation for many other crimes like murders or robberies, where innocent people can be victimized.

"If we can take a drug dealer off the street, we are going to possibly save a younger generation that is turning to the drug world," he said. "And if we save one child that is a victory that I consider very big.

One by one, police chiefs with each local department got up to speak at a press conference Thursday. Most noted that their departments receive calls every single day from people concerned about possible drug activity in their neighborhood. They stressed they need the community's help to apprehend as many dealers as possible. To report information, you can call Crime Stoppers at (336) 229-7100.
