MUMBAI, India — An Air India worker died after he was sucked into an aircraft engine, BBC News reported.

The accident happened as a jet bound to Hyderabad was being pushed back for departure.

“We are deeply saddened and regret the tragic incident,” said Air India chairman Ashwani Lohani, who added that the “mishap” was being investigated.

The Times of India reported that the accident occurred Wednesday night when the co-pilot started the engine. The victim, Ravi Subramanium, was standing nearby.

“No one knew what happened. All of a sudden we heard that the technician has been sucked into the engine,” the newspaper quoted an airline source as saying.
