MEMPHIS, Ga. — School officials say a man used a fake transcript to enroll at a Memphis high school so he could play basketball.

According to WREG, the man, who was on the basketball team at Ridgeway High School, was married and had his GED.

State officials found out about the man’s true identity and disqualified the team, which had just risen to the number three ranking in the state, WREG reports.

A student tells WREG the man was 22 years old.  Other sources say the man was a former gang member in New Orleans and that his wife signed papers claiming she was his guardian, WREG reports.

The team has experienced other troubles over the past month.  Last week, the assistant coach was found dead.  Two weeks ago, several players were involved in a fight that got the majority of them benched, the station reports.
