RANDLEMAN, N.C. — A 4-year-old rescue dog named Abby is credited with helping find a gunman suspected of shooting two officers with the Randolph County sheriff’s office Monday afternoon in Randleman.
Authorities said 36-year-old Jamey Lee Ashley lead officers on a 4-hour manhunt after investigators said he shot two Randolph County deputies during a traffic stop.
“She’s very friendly, very sweet, very laid back,” said Abby’s owner Michelle Williams. “I’m so proud of her.”
Abby’s friendliness paid off when neighbors said she wouldn’t stop barking at an abandoned barn. Neighbors worried she may have found the suspect called 911.
Investigators credit Abby’s constant barking for leading them to Ashley. Officials said the suspect was found inside the barn on his knees.
Abby, a brown and white pit bull mix, was rescued from the Randolph County Animal Shelter.
