Woman struck by vehicle in Davidson Co. after running out of gas

DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. -- A 22-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle early Tuesday morning when she ran out of gas and had to push her car out of the road.

Troopers said Brittany Jernigan of Ridgeway, Va., was headed east on Old U.S. 64 in a Ford Mustang when the car ran out of gas. She then got out of the car and attempted to push it out of the road.

Jernigan lost her shoe in the process, ran back to retrieve it and was struck by a vehicle.

Officials say the incident happened at 5:28 a.m. in the area of Reeds Crossroads, around U.S. 64 West and N.C. 150.

Jernigan was wearing dark clothing and it was raining when the incident occurred. The driver will not be charged.

Jernigan and her 16-year-old passenger were on their way back to Virginia after visiting a friend in the area. The passenger was not hurt.

Jernigan suffered non life-threatening injuries.
