72-year-old Alamance County woman charged with rape of a child

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — A woman is in custody in connection with multiple sex offenses involving a juvenile.

Edna Mae Overman, 72, of Liberty, is charged with felony child abuse – prostitution, first-degree rape of a child, two counts of first-degree sex offense and indecent liberties with a minor.

On Nov. 25, detectives with the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office Juvenile Investigations Unit arrested Overman.

The charges stem from an investigation initiated several weeks ago following a report filed by the family of the victim.

The allegations date back to 2002 and span a time frame of several years.

Overman was placed under a $300,000 secured bond.

This is the second arrest related to the investigation. On Nov. 3, her husband, William Roger Overman, was arrested on similar charges and placed under a $400,000 secured bond.

William Overman was charged additionally with incest and prostitution of a child. He was placed under an additional $125,000 secured bond, raising his total bond amount to $525,000.

An investigation is ongoing.
