DURHAM, N.C. — A 7-year-old boy is in critical condition at Duke Medical Center Hospital after a pool accident Saturday, according to WTVD-TV.

Durham Police say other swimmers found the child floating face down in a pool at the Brightleaf Community Center, on Copper Leaf Parkway. It happened just before 3 p.m. The pool shut down for the rest of the day.

Medical professionals were able to get the child out of the water and started CPR.

The little boy was then reportedly rushed to the hospital.

Police say the pool was packed at the time, and a couple of birthday parties for children were underway.

Police say the child was with a guardian when he went under the water.

Lauren Higdon lives in the community.

“I was immediately in tears,” Higdon said. “It’s an awful, awful thing that you don’t think could ever happen to your child. And it’s just awful that they were here having fun and celebrating.”

The near drowning is hitting home for her since her son and the little boy in the pool are around the same age.

“Things get crowded and lots of kids, 9-year-olds, often think they can be independent and parents think they can be independent and it’s just sad,” Higdon said. “It’s very unfortunate. I’m praying he pulls through.”

Higdon said there are lifeguards at the pool.
