LEXINGTON, N.C. — Deputies say a 5-year-old boy was seriously injured over the weekend in an accident involving a lawn mower.

According to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred Sunday at a home on Hickory Point Drive.

A witness told deputies the 5-year-old walked behind his father while the dad was mowing.

“The father did not see his son and backed over him, trapping his foot under the mowing deck,” deputies said in a news release.

Deputies say the boy suffered “major injuries” to his right leg.  He was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where hospital staff said his leg will have to be amputated at the knee.

No charges are being filed in the incident.
