EDEN, N.C. — Police on Tuesday said they are investigating after a 5-month-old child from Eden died as a result of head trauma.

Eden police Lt. Clint Simpson said the infant, who was identified as Dagan Matthew Gammon, was taken to Morehead Memorial Hospital on the night of June 2.

Officers were called to the hospital around 8 p.m. that night to investigate the possibility of child abuse, Simpson said.

The child was later transferred to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly before noon on June 5, Simpson said.

Simpson said detectives have spoken with the child’s mother, but he did not provide the mother’s account of what happened.

The infant’s body has been taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

No other details were provided.  Anyone with further information is asked to call police at (336) 623-9240 or Crimestoppers at 349-9683.
