BEAUFORT, N.C. — Archaeologists recovered five cannons and two other large artifacts from the wreckage of Blackbeard’s ship “Queen Anne’s Revenge” in Beaufort Monday.
According to the Carteret County News-Times, one of the cannons weighs 3,000 pounds with the other four weighing about 2,000 pounds.
Billy Ray Morris, Deputy Archaeologist, said that with the raising of the five, it now makes 22 cannons raised from the site.
It was reported there are at least eight remaining on the ocean floor. So far, 30 cannons have been discovered at the site, with three of those during this year’s dive season.
After unloading the artifacts at the Coast Guard station, the five cannons were transported to the QAR conservation lab in Greenville.
Blackbeard, the world’s most famous pirate, captured a French slave ship and renamed it Queen Anne’s Revenge in 1717. The wreckage was reportedly found in 1996.
