4 charged with murder in Watauga County homicide

SUGAR GROVE, N.C. — Four people have been charged in connection with the murder of an Iredell County man Thursday morning.

At approximately 6:30 a.m., a call came in to the Watauga County 911 Center regarding a gunshot wound inflicted on a man near the 200 block of Smith Henson Road in Sugar Grove.

Brandon Lee Byrd, 32, of Iredell County, was determined to have died at the scene.

Five people were interviewed by the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and four were subsequently charged.

William David Cable Jr., 34, of Sugar Grove; Travis Lane Ward, 29, of Vilas; Candice Rogers, 26, of Sugar Grove; and Jessica Lynn Oakes, 28, of Sugar Grove, were all arrested on Thursday.

All four are charged with murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. They will be held without bond until appearance before a Superior Court judge.

They are scheduled to appear in court Feb. 19.
