The Triad Holiday Food Drive is a corporate-based initiative that encourages local businesses to help feed the hungry in the Triad by hosting internal food drives and fundraisers.
Organized by FOX8 and Old Dominion Freight Lines, the Food Drive benefits the local Salvation Army food pantries in the Triad area. This is the largest and most important food raising event of the year for The Salvation Army. It occurs in the fall prior to the Holiday Concerts that are held each December.
How much is that food needed? Last year, over 20,000 people where served. However, in recent years the need in the Triad has exceeded the cans collected at the concerts. In 2012, the Greensboro/High Point metropolitan area was ranked second in rates of food hardship, according to the Food Research and Action Center’s most recent study Food Hardship in America 2012.
Last year, with the support of the community, The Salvation Army in Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point collected more than 468,000 canned food items for hungry families and individuals. Our goal this year is to help fill those pantries with enough food so they are stocked year-round. We cannot accomplish this without the participation of more companies and schools!
