HIGH POINT, N.C. — The fatal shooting of a toddler in High Point this weekend was an accident, according to High Point police.

The 2-year-old shot himself in the head at his house at 1301 Filbert Place about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, according to police. The toddler died a few hours later at the hospital.

The incident is being investigated as an accident. It’s not immediately clear how the toddler got the gun. At least one parent was home with him.

Neighbor Marvin Johnson said it was the first time he had seen the toddler and his father Saturday afternoon.

Johnson said the father asked if they had any extra toys for his son to play with on the porch of Filbert Place and within minutes they heard a shooting sound.

“He said, ‘thank you for the toys,’ and the dad was just sitting there with his back kind of turned to us and just texting on his phone… and it wasn’t 10 minutes later we heard a pop,” Johnson said. “When the baby fell the daddy jumped up and said, ‘My baby just shot himself’ and that’s when San and I rushed over to the yard to see what we could do to help you know.”

The owner of the home tells FOX8 anonymously he’s only lived there for a few weeks. He said the death is truly a tragedy but admits he does not know the family. He said the toddler’s father came to visit his nephew that day.

Police have not released the names of anyone involved.

According to a Go Fund Me page created by a family friend, the two year old’s name in Benson Jones.

Major Casterline with High Point Police said it’s too early in the investigation to confirm details of the case. They are still gathering forensic evidence and interviewing family members amongst the funeral plans.
FOX8 called Walter Jones’ office with the Guilford County District Attorney office for information on possible charges, but have yet to get a response.
