HIGH POINT, N.C. — Two people escaped injury Tuesday morning after the engine compartment of the truck which they were traveling in burst into flames along northbound Interstate 74 south of High Point.

The driver of the truck told FOX8 he heard a pop, smelled burnt plastic and lost power to the truck shortly before it caught fire. A fellow truck driver saw the flames and rushed a fire extinguisher across the interstate, but it was not enough to put out the fire.

The Guil-Rand Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze. Brian Causey, an assistant chief and a fire investigator with the department, said he believes the fire was caused by a mechanical malfunction. There were no injuries.

A northbound lane of I-74 was briefly closed Tuesday while the fire was extinguished. The trailer being towed by the truck was empty at the time of the fire.
