DANVILLE, Va. — Two children died in a Danville house fire overnight.

Firefighters responded to a home located at 919 Halifax Road. The victims have been identified as 10-year-old Makayla Davis and 4-year-old Destine Adkins.

When crews arrived on the scene, they saw fire and heavy smoke coming out of the one story home.

People outside the home told firefighters children were trapped inside. One neighbor, Kevin Hoover, says he tried to help.

“I went around the side of the house. I busted the window out. I heard the most awful sound I’ve ever heard in my life. I couldn’t get them,” said Hoover.

Crews were eventually able to find the two children and carry them out of the home.

Firefighters tried to resuscitate the children before turning them over to paramedics who transported them to the hospital.

The 4-year-old and 10-year-old girls were pronounce dead at the hospital.

Danville Public Schools officials say the 4-year-old girl attended Northside Preschool, and the 10-year-old attended Gibson Elementary School. Principals at both schools told students about the fire and sent notes home to parents. Guidance counselors were also to students Thursday.

There is no word on where the parents were at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
