BURLINGTON, N.C. — Three people have been charged in connection with a fatal shooting at Burlington City Park on Monday, according to Lt. C.E. Gaddis with Burlington police.
Khakim Malik Harvey, 20, of Burlington, Brittany Nicole Slade, 22, of Haw River, and Akayzee Kareona Wright, 17, of Burlington, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Tony Daye Jr., 21, was found shot several times near a bathroom at Burlington City Park Monday night.
Daye was shot in the chest and legs and later died from his injuries, according to police.
“I have every reason to believe that the shooters knew who their target was and that it was not random and was an intentional act,” Captain Brett Taylor, with Burlington police, told FOX8 Tuesday night.
With homes and businesses near the park, Taylor says the shooting could have been much worse.
“Any of those houses could have been hit by the gunfire,” he said.
“Although a motive or other information is being withheld at this time, it has been determined that this event had no direct connection to the Burlington City Park,” Gaddis said in a news release Wednesday evening. “It has always been and remains a safe and family friendly community space.”
Harvey, Slade and Wright are all being held in the Alamance County Jail with no bond allowed.
