HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Two alligators have been captured and destroyed on Hilton Head Island.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported that one of the alligators, weighing about 600 pounds, was removed from a gated community on Labor Day night after it ate a dog.

The second gator was spotted Tuesday by a vacationer on the island. Alligator wranglers were able to catch it Wednesday afternoon.

Officials say the 9-foot-gator was destroyed because it was too large to be returned to the area where it was caught.
