17-year-old dead outside Durham Police Department headquarters

DURHAM, N.C. — The SBI is investigating the death of a 17-year-old who was in Durham Police Department custody, according to a spokesperson with the North Carolina Department of Justice.

According to WTVD, the high school student had been arrested by Durham Police and then died in the parking lot of the Durham PD headquarters.

They student was identified him as Jesus Huerta, a student at Riverside High School.

WTVD reported that the boy died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but that has not been officially confirmed by police.

Crime tape was up around a police cruiser in the parking lot after the incident that happened around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. It appeared the cruiser crashed into a parked vehicle.
