GREENSBORO, N.C. – A 14-year-old Western Guilford High School student has been identified as the sole person responsible for posting threatening messages on Instagram early Thursday morning under the profile name “greensboroclowns.”

Greensboro police said officers interviewed the student who wrote the three messages about clowns attacking Greensboro schools and learned the student intended the posts as pranks.

The student had no intent or plans to harm others and has been charged as a juvenile with communicating threats, according to police.

The posts have been removed from Instagram, but police said copycat posts are beginning to appear on various social media sites. Police said they will investigate any that contain threats.
