SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities announced Wednesday they have arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with an 11-year-old Sampson County girl’s death last year, according to WTVD.

McKenzie Mae Sessoms, a student at Salemburg Elementary School, was found unresponsive on her living room couch by her father on Sept. 6.

Sheriff Jimmy Thornton said the male suspect was arrested Tuesday night after an eight-month investigation. The suspect’s name has not been released by officials.

An autopsy revealed Sessoms had been sexually assaulted and suffocated.

The suspect is currently being held in a detention center in New Hanover County.
