DUNCANNON, Pa. — A 12-year-old girl was shot and killed by a state constable during an apartment eviction in Pennsylvania on Monday, according to WHTM.

Pennsylvania State Constable Clarke Steele was at an apartment complex in Duncannon with an eviction order for Donald Meyer and his family.

Police told WHTM that Steele and Meyer exchanged words. Meyer then pointed a loaded .223 caliber rifle at Steele.

Steele, who was in uniform, unholstered his .40 caliber handgun and fired one shot, police told WHTM. The shot passed through Meyer’s left upper arm and struck his 12-year-old daughter, identified by family members as Ciara Meyer.

Ciara Meyer was pronounced dead at the scene. Donald Meyer was airlifted to Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

Police said employees of the apartment complex were on scene for the eviction and witnessed the event.

Meyer was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristic threats and reckless endangerment. He was arraigned Tuesday by video.

A source close to his family told WHTM that Steele is “very distraught over the situation.”

Steele has decided to suspend his work until an investigation is complete, a spokesman for the Commonwealth Constables Association said.
