HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — One of the beaches on Hilton Head Island had an unusual visitor on Monday … a 12-foot alligator.

According to the Island Packet, the gator, estimated to be 45 years old and approximately 800 pounds, walked out of the surf around 8 a.m. Monday.

A bystander alerted a member of beach patrol, who contacted Joe Maffo of Critter Management to remove it.

It took 40 minutes to restrain the alligator with ropes, tape and a snare it so it could be safely moved.

Maffo said he was exhausted after wrangling the big alligator.

Maffo said the alligator will be destroyed under S.C. Department of Natural Resources regulations. However, he said he planned to talk to DNR about possibly relocating the large alligator, which he suspected was returning home at the end of mating season.
