WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Jason Taylor is a 10-year-old boy living near New Hope Lane in Winston-Salem. Sunday evening around 10:45, Jason — also known as “JJ” — was walking home.

“I was walking in the street, minding my own business, with two soda cans on my side,” JJ said.

What happened next had JJ thinking this walk would be his last.

“Out of nowhere, three shots fired somewhere else and one shot hit me,” JJ said.

Winston-Salem police say two people had been fighting nearby when one of them started shooting. One of the bullets hit JJ, who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“I felt the shot and it was painful,” JJ said. “I [was] thinking after that shot it’s just over.”

JJ’s father, Deshawn, was inside when the shooting took place.

“I just went over there wildin’, like any parent would do,” Deshawn said.

At the time, neither Deshawn nor JJ knew how serious the injury was. Luckily, it was a single shot which grazed JJ’s torso.

“Every time I twist, it’s just pain,” JJ said, while motioning toward his wound.

Deshawn says Sunday’s incident is a testament to how bad things have gotten in their neighborhood.

“This is a bad neighborhood; they need to fix this place up,” Deshawn said. “There’s too much gunplay going on around all these kids.”

JJ will be able to attend school on Tuesday.

Police have not identified the person responsible for the shooting.
