DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C.–10-year-old Zack Reno was shot in Davidson County while playing outside Friday afternoon.

“[Zack’s parents] heard the boys hollering and uncle hollering ‘Zack had been shot,” said Pam Curlee, Zack’s cousin.

Curlee says Zack was playing outside on Clark Road near Linwood with his brother Blake Reno, 7, and older uncle Stephen Browning when a bullet grazed his arm and went in and out of his right hip.

“He’s one of those kids that would rather be outside than be on the play station inside the house,” Curlee said.

Zack was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries and was released on Friday evening.

Investigators told family they believe the bullet came from about 200 yards in the woods behind the family home.  Deputies spent the afternoon searching the woods and a field near the family home looking for where the bullet may have come from. Investigators also knocked on the doors of a nearby mobile home park.

Curlee says it’s not uncommon for people to shoot in the woods and field behind the family home.  “I think it’s just somebody being careless.”
