GREENSBORO, N.C. – A man who was shot outside the Four Seasons Town Centre shopping mall in Greensboro on Thursday has died after being taken to the hospital.
The identity of the victim has not been released. Police were called to the shooting at about 2:16 p.m., according to Susan Danielsen, a spokeswoman for the Greensboro Police Department.
Police said there was some kind of a dispute between the victim and the suspect outside the JCPenney entrance.
There was a loud argument and the victim was shot more than once. Police said the suspect then left in a car.
It remains uncertain if the suspect and victim knew each other or how many suspects there were.
Angela Baldwin says she saw the victim lying on the ground while she was on her way to JCPenny to make some returns.
“At the time I was just returning some items very quickly,” Baldwin said. “I wanted to make a return and leave and enjoy my normal day and this happened. It kind of makes me feel a little anxious. You just don’t expect this to happen in the middle of the day on a Thursday.”
Baldwin says she realized the man was shot after talk with other people who heard the gunshots.
“They had actually heard five or six gunshots,” Baldwin said. “When I came on the scene, I just know that I saw the person lying there with bystanders over them.”
Greensboro police and EMS were called to the scene, which had cleared by about 4:30 p.m. The mall remained open Thursday night.
Four schools in the area had been placed on lock down: Ben L Smith High School, Murphey Traditional Academy, Archer Elementary and Jackson Middle School. The lock downs have since been lifted.
Back in February, another man was shot and killed outside the same mall in almost the exact spot. Westley Tyler Tugman, 33, of Lenoir, was shot in the torso in front of JCPenney during an attempted robbery. He was an innocent victim.
