2 killed in car crash on Highway 68 near Oak Ridge; roadways now open

OAK RIDGE, N.C. — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that killed two people on Highway 68 near Oak Ridge Thursday morning.

Master Trooper Chris Knox says a car operated by Haywood Anderson Jr. was trying to pass another vehicle in a no-passing lane when it struck a box truck driven by Steven Francis Stockhill head-on. After impact, the vehicle hit the car it was attempting to pass and ran off the road. The box truck also ran off the road and overturned.

The accident involved five cars, with three getting hit and two being damaged while driving over debris from the initial wreck.

Anderson Jr. died on the scene and Stockstill died at the Moses Cone Hospital. No additional injuries were reported.

Both lanes on N.C. 68 near Peeples Road were closed but have since opened.

The investigation is ongoing.
