1 killed, 1 seriously injured in wreck on Business 40 in Kernersville

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — One person was killed and another was seriously injured in a wreck on Interstate 40 Business/U.S. 421 Tuesday morning, according to a news release from Officer L.D. Griffith with Kernersville police.

At 7:44 a.m., a Kernersville police officer located at 1996 Dodge Dakota pickup truck overturned on the shoulder of the road near mile marker 13.

Medical and rescue personnel were called to the scene.

One of the occupants, believed to be the driver, was assisted by other motorists out of the vehicle. He was identified as 40-year-old Carlos Arturo Amaya Martinez, of Winston-Salem.

Martinez was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with serious injuries.

Another occupant of the vehicle, believed to be the passenger, was partially ejected out of the vehicle resulting in fatal injuries, the release said.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family members.

I-40 Business/U.S 421 was closed for several hours but was reopened at 11:45 a.m.

The wreck is still under investigation. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the Kernersville Police Department.
