LEXINGTON, N.C. — The Lexington Police Department is investigating a traffic fatality in what it says was a head-on collision between a scooter and a US Postal Service mail delivery vehicle.

The unmarked postal vehicle was traveling west on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and the scooter was traveling east. The two vehicles collided near the intersection of Tussey Street.

The scooter driver was killed and the mail carrier driver was taken to Lexington Hospital.

The mail vehicle went off the roadway after the accident, flipping over and causing minor injuries to the driver.

Witnesses to the wreck had her out of the vehicle by the time emergency personnel arrived.

The roadway was littered with parts and pieces from the scooter as neighbors looked on in disbelief.

Lexington police are doing a reconstruction investigation to determine exactly why these vehicles collided on a wide four-lane road.
