DOBSON, N.C. — Investigators have arrested one man and are looking for two others in a kidnapping and armed robbery case.

Ryan Hughs, 21, of Pilot Mountain was arrested Thursday.

Deputies are searching for Melvin Duncan, 52, and Candy Maynor, 27, both of Pilot Mountain.

All three are believed to have lured a 67-year-old Ararat man from his home by saying their car had broken down. Investigators say once the man walked outside he was hit in the head with a gun and robbed of $315 and two cell phones.

“It was a simple case of pick out a target. They knew who he was, they knew he was there,” said Sheriff Graham Atkinson, who is asking residents to be more cautious before opening their door. “If somebody comes to the door, especially at night, somebody you are not comfortable with, don’t open the door.”

Sheriff Atkinson says if someone knocks asking for help, offer to call someone for them without opening your door or call the sheriff’s office.

“Don’t let them inside your home and certainly don’t open the door and go outside … because at that point you don’t know who else is out there.”

If you know anything that can help investigators, contact the Surry County Sheriff’s Office at 336-401-8900.
